++ ABOUT RABI~EN~ROSE (USADA HIKARU)
|
|
Name(s): Usada Hikaru
|
Because Dejiko wants to be an idol, she inevitably gains a rival. Enter Rabi~en~Rose, the pink-haired, rabbit-eared, dice-toting girl who suddenly proclaims herself as Dejiko's rival. Her real name is Usada Hikaru, but she prefers to be called by her stage name "Rabi~en~Rose", since it sounds more "idol-like". Rabi~en~Rose also ends up working at Gamers, much to Dejiko's dismay. Dejiko and Rabi take delight in annoying the snot out of each other -- where Dejiko and Rabi are, chaos and destruction are not too far behind. Unlike Dejiko or Puchiko, Rabi attends school when she's not working, and flips between school girl and wannabe idol mode much like a superhero.
Rabi~en~Rose is actually quite normal, compared to her coworkers, Dejiko and Puchiko. She attends school while working at Gamers, much like any other teenager. Though Rabi would probably never admit it, she and Dejiko are very similar in some ways -- Rabi also dreams of being an idol, and is nearly just as conceited as a certain green-haired cat girl. While not as energetic as Dejiko, Rabi is a lot more polished and smooth than the somewhat rude and spunky Dejiko, making Rabi the more ideal Gamers store clerk. While working at Gamers, she wears a pink and white waitress outfit, and instead of cat gear, sports huge bunny ears and a fluffy tail, along with an enormous pair of dice in her hair. She also wears a blue school uniform when attending school, and her hair is demurely braided. Rabi even wears glasses, and insists on being called by her real name at school. It's interesting to note that while Rabi's at Gamers, she insists that everyone call her by her stage name, but when she's at school, she gets quite annoyed if you call her Rabi~en~Rose -- it appears that no one at school is aware of her super-idol aspirations.
Since Rabi~en~Rose can't fire lasers from her eyes, she does have the ability to use her gigantic bunny ears as helicopter propellers. Failing that, she can somehow summon a large group of kappas (rather cute looking penguin creatures -- though in japanese folklore, they're actually water demons that lure people to the edge of the water, where they can kill them) that can transport her from point A to point B (carrying her with their little green arms). She's also known to be able to whip out large amounts of guns and missile launchers at any given moment. And unlike Dejiko and company, she speaks normally, with no added words at the end of her sentences.
The reason Rabi~en~Rose wants to become an idol is due to her parents. Some time during her childhood, her parents left for America, leaving her to grow up alone. They claimed that if she lived a hard life, it would help her to become a famous idol. Before he left, her father gave her a set of dice, for good luck (in becoming an idol) -- and sailed away to America, leaving Rabi~en~Rose to stare in confusion. Ever since then, she has worn the huge dice clips in her hair, and carries around a small dice mascot with her. Since Rabi grew up in poverty (without her parents to support her), she is unused to modern refinements like central air conditioning -- a fact that Dejiko loves to make fun of.
Rabi~en~Rose's name carries a number of puns. Her real name (Usada Hikaru) closely resembles the name of a famous J-pop singer named "Utada Hikaru". Her stage name (Rabi~en~Rose) also resembles the name of a popular J-rock band called "L'arc~en~Ciel" -- and also, when spoken aloud, Rabi's stage name sounds like "la vie en rose", which is french for "life among the roses" -- a more familiar translation would be "life through rose coloured glasses". This saying applies to Rabi in a way, since even though she lived a life of poverty, she's still quite optimistic in her dream of becoming a great idol.
One day, Rabi~en~Rose meets Minagawa Takurou, a fourteen year old boy who comes to shop at Gamers. One of Rabi's ears were stuck in the bookshelf (apparently for a day or so) and Minagawa frees her. During a later episode, Rabi also helps him out by saving him from diahhrea (for some reason, Minagawa likes to eat food that's lying in the road -- not too smart). Over the course of the series, Minagawa develops a fondness for Rabi and does such cute things like knit her a sweater for when the air conditioning at Gamers is too cold for her. Minagawa is always careful to call Rabi by her stage name, and later in the series (during the Hanami Series), Minagawa and Rabi attend the same school. The two of them eventually become friends, though Rabi has to occasionally remind Minagawa to stop calling her by her stage name at school.
