++ REASONS FOR LOVING DIGI CHARAT
There's just something so irresistible about DiGi Charat -- it has this addictive mix of humour and random chaos that I absolutely adore. One day, I was surfing around and found some random DiGi Charat images. The aforementioned images were so cute, I wanted to find out more about these character, and what series they came from. Sometime in 2001, I found the fansubbed episodes of the initial TV series, and after watching them, I was utterly hooked. DiGi Charat isn't complicated or romantic, and doesn't even bother to make sense most of the time. Some people won't like the sheer nonsensical nature of the series, but if you can get past that, it's a great series.
Some people will argue that the animation quality is so poor, it looks like it was drawn and coloured by children. I agree. The series (undoubtedly aimed towards a younger audience, and not twenty-something year olds like me) has a simple kind of charm that's all about having fun. The characters are straightforward and solid -- laced with wonderfully odd personal quirks. Dejiko has a horrible temper and is terribly sneaky, Puchiko is constantly fending off her fanboy, and Rabi~en~Rose's childhood story makes no sense whatsoever. Everyone beats up poor Gema. They're all one big happy (violent) family. :D :D :D
Obviously, I love the characters (I'm especially fond of Rabi~en ~Rose). Yes, they're horribly cute. Aside from that, there's also a great character dynamic between all the members of the cast, somewhat like the ball that bounces around in a pinball machine. The characters bounce and ricochet off each other's quirks and pet peeves, leaving you with a general sense of chaos and glee. Welcome to Gamers, where the store is reduced to rubble nearly everyday! (Often by Dejiko herself).
The series also likes to poke fun at fanboy culture, dressing Dejiko and company in fanservicey outfits, and sprinkling the cast with token fanboys. The "idol" mentality that's so huge in Japan is somewhat of a mystery to most non-japanese people, and I find that DiGi Charat likes to poke fun at the somewhat cliché dream of being an idol as well. There's probably a lot of other cultural jokes I'm missing, but hey, I'm not Japanese. ^^;;
Overall, it's hard for me to describe DiGi Charat because personally, I feel like this series is truly different from anything else out there. It just has a certain brand of insanity and general chaos that no other series has (without resorting to inappropriate groping or other naughty slapstick bits), and when you add cute characters, it becomes nearly impossible to resist. Sure, it all makes no sense. But as long as you're having fun, that's all that matters, right?
