It's the million dollar question: what makes Nanami tick? In this section, we unravel Nanami's psyche and try to put a reason to why she does the things she does. Though most people shrug Nanami off as an annoying or disturbing character, I personally think that Nanami is a wonderfully crafted character. Our mischievious trickster is an interesting case study, and easily could be one of the most complex characters created in Shoujo Kakumei Utena.
Why? Because she's two faced and manipulative, and at the same time heartbreakingly devoted and innocent. On the outside, one sees Nanami as a seemingly sweet and sunny person -- but don't be fooled by that innocent smile. Just beneath the surface lies a person who would plot someone's downfall in an instant, and not bat an eyelash in regret. Nanami is a girl who wants the world on a silver platter, and the moon on a necklace -- and people are willing to tolerate and even admire her outrageous antics. This is largely because there is something about this girl that makes her so loveably rotten, and there is far more to her than the spoiled Kiryuu girl.
