Layer Six: Untouchable

A group of powerful hackers exist on the wired -- a group so elite and strong that they are almost god-like themselves, as they toy with people's lives and memories, and use the Wired as a playground to wreak havoc and fulfill their slightest whims. In real life, they are ordinary people; one is a stay at home mother, with a young boy who is enthusiastic about video games. Another is a business man, and yet another is an obese man, who has closeted himself from society. But on the Wired, they take on another identity -- they are known as the Knights of the Eastern Calculus, or to most people, the Knights.

These are the people who are responsible for Mika being trapped in both the wired and the real world, and the same people who are responsible for the creation of Lain of the Wired. They created Lain of the Wired to undermine Lain's position in the real world, and to draw her to the Wired, in the hopes that she would leave her flesh and fully integrate the Wired and the real world. It was because of this selfish desire that they cause so much suffering -- particularly, Alice's suffering, due to her secret being leaked out by Lain of the Wired. Out of anger and the need to end Alice's ordeal, Lain reveals the identity of the Knights and broadcasts it over the Wired -- at that point, the Men In Black take over and assassinate the members of the Knights.

But why did the Knights exist in the first place? They existed because they "worshipped" the God of the Wired, Masami Eiri. They existed in the Wired because Eiri had given them the means to their power as the Knights -- in exchange for their worship...
