Common SEL Terms

There are many terms used throughout Serial Experiments Lain that make references to computers, the Wired, and research. I spent a lot of time looking up these terms after I watched the series, so I hope this list clears up some of the commonly used terms SEL.

- Cyberia -
A club that young people go to to unwind and have some fun. Alice, Reika, and Julie took Lain here in Layer 2: Girls. Many "Lain of the Wired" sightings were at Cyberia; Taro, Jay-Jay, and even Alice and the girls were among those who had thought they had seen Lain at Cyberia before. Cyberia also seems to be a sort of underground club, where information and illegal goods (the Accela drug can be found there) can be obtained.

- Deus of the Wired -
Meaning, "the God of the Wired" -- Masami Eiri refers to himself as the "Deus of the Wired" because he believed himself a real god, with many worshippers and omnipotent powers.

- K.I.D.S. (aka: the Kensington Experiments) -
An experiment that involved harnessing the latent psi power in children. At the head of this project was Professor Hodgeson -- he ended up destroying all records of his work because of KIDS' horrific deathtoll; the children involved in the experiment were killed. Years later, a copy of his work was found by the Knights, and was being used again by them.

- Navi -
A "navi" is a computer that allows people to connect to do many things (such as common tasks, play games, and connect to The Wired) and comes in both a PC and pocket-sized model.

- Phantoma -
An online game that is played on the Wired, set in a labrynthine, underground world. Many people were reported to have been killed, or have killed in these games; this is because the game was mixed with a game of tag that children played. There is evidence that the Wired and real world is blurring within this game, as real people are dying within it.

- Psyche (pronounced "puh-shoo-kay") -
A small chip that allows a user to view and connect to the Wired, without external devices. It was given to Lain anonymously, and was believed to have been sent from the Knights.

- The 7th Protocol -
The protocol which Eiri tampered with, making it possible for the real and Wired worlds to come together. Eiri also based his theories on the Schumann Resonance, with which he believed could be used as a means of connecting without devices.

- The Schumann Resonance -
The resonance frequencies of the the Earth's electromagnetic field was measured by a man named W.O. Schumann -- it is this resonance that Masami Eiri uses as a base for his theory on connecting to the Wired, minus devices. Eiri believed that this resonance could have been used to make all humans connect on a single consciousness, as they were before. It is theorized that the Schumann Resonance could be used as a global communications device, capable of connecting from any point on the Earth.

- Tachibana Labs -
A company that produces Navis and other technological goods. They fired Masami Eiri when they had learned of what he did to the 7th Protocol and created Lain so that she might fix the mistake Eiri had made. Iwakura Yasuo (Lain's father) was an employee of Tachibana Labs.

- The Wired -
This is what the SEL series calls the internet, and the place where Eiri wants people to connect to, instead of living in the real world. It was believed by many to be a place of higher conciousness, where God himself may have resided.
