Reasons For Lain

Why is Iwakura Lain a character worth making a shrine for? When I began watching Serial Experiments Lain, I was immediately hooked on the series. Lain is as close to a "regular" girl as you can get -- she's not flawlessly beautiful, she doesn't have big bouncy breasts, and she's not a schoolgirl stereotype. Instead, she's plain and shy, a wallflower who is easily ignored and often forgotten. Lain's character is one that many people can sympathize with; until the arrival of Alice, Lain's world is a lonely place.

What truly inspired me about Lain's character was the impact of one person on her life. Even though there are many themes in SEL, Lain's emotional growth during the series is wonderful. She began as such a timid and passive person, and in the end, did the most selfless act in order to save someone she loved. Even when the world fell away from Lain, she wanted to make things right for Alice.

Perhaps because of the age that we live in now, Lain's story is even more believable. Computers and the internet play a big role in everyone's lives, and it's true that many young people (myself included) are spending so much time online. Lain's journey into the Wired is a hauntingly accurate picture of the dangers of the online world. Some people become so obsessed with the world online, they begin to ignore the real world and the real people around them. SEL is mirrors a facet of society that is very real, and it makes for interesting viewing.

When you get right down to it, I just really liked Lain. That's enough reason for me to make a shrine, isn't it?
