Layer Five: Informant
Along the way, Lain has encountered people who have given her information about the Wired, or who she is. Each person listed here have all told something to Lain that was important, and are listed in no particular order.
While visiting Cyberia, Lain meets three children. Taro, Myu-Myu, and Masayuki are children who are regulars at Cyberia -- Taro, a smart talking, almost pushy boy seems to be the leader of the trio. Surprisingly knowledgeable about Navis and the Wired, he tells Lain about the Psyche Processor and what it can do. Taro thought that he saw Lain before, but what he really saw was Lain of the Wired -- and rather impudently, he states that he wants a date with the "wild" Lain. After a while, Taro does get to go on a date with Lain, but when he sees just what she is capable of, he is both shocked and scared. But regardless of his shock, he leans over and gives Lain a kiss, claiming that they were on a date -- rather pushy and conceited of Taro, and shocking to Lain. Myu-Myu is very possessive of Taro, and acts as if he is her boyfriend, while Masayuki doesn't really say much.
Also at Cyberia, is Jay-Jay, the resident DJ. Jay-Jay, like Taro, thought he recognized Lain, and commented on her "schoolgirl look", because he was used to seeing the wild "Lain of the Wired". He is also the one who tells Lain about Phantoma, which is a game that users play online -- which unfortunately was accidentally merged with a game of tag that was played by children.
And then, there is the two suited figures who follow Lain around. These two shady men, coined "the men in black" because of their black suits spied on Lain for much of the beginning episodes -- they were hired by Tachibana Labs to keep an eye on Lain. They have special goggles that give them enhanced sight, and also emit an eerie red crosshair. Carl and Hayashi introduce Lain to their client, a man who works for Tachibana; this man relentlessly questions her, throwing doubt in what little Lain held dear to her. They are also the ones who seem responsible for the deaths of the Knights -- and once their task is complete, they too follow mysterious deaths. Before they left Lain, however, Carl lingered a moment, and admitted that he did love Lain -- maybe it was because of the time he spent watching her; maybe he had developed a feeling of fondness for the girl that he had been spying on.
