Layer Three: Companions
Kato Julie and Yamamoto Reika are Alice's friends. The three girls are often seen together, and becomes Lain's friends as well when Alice insists on her joining them on outings. Julie is the more emotional of the group, more prone to worrying and outbursts of emotion -- when she is first seen in episode one (Layer 1: Weird), she is crying because she had received one of Chisa's emails. Julie also pokes a little fun at Lain, but for the most part, Julie likes Lain, and is good friends with her.
Yamamoto Reika is the one with straight hair and tilted eyes. She is the more vocal of the group and tends to speak her mind. She likes to make fun of Lain, from her inappropriate clothes at Cyberia, to Lain preferring the Wired to real people. She is also the snobbier one of the group, and pays attention to her clothes and image. Although does make fun of Lain, Reika is only teasing -- but regardless of intent, Alice always steps in and defends Lain from Reika's barbed comments.
For awhile, Lain starts to hang out with Alice and the girls -- and it is Reika who notices the sudden change in Lain's manner. And when Lain begins to slip more and more into the Wired, she begins to ignore the girls again, isolating herself once more....
